The book tells about the development of Turgenev's talent in the early stages of his literary career, about the development of his philosophical ideas, personality, and worldview. A critical analysis of Turgenev's early works reveals his talent and shows how he evolved. Mikhail Osipovich Gershenzon (born Meilikh Iosifovich Gershenzon, 1869-1925) was a Russian thinker, cultural historian, critic, publicist, and translator. He is best known as the author of works on Pushkin, Turgenev, Chaadaev, and the era of Nicholas I. After the February Revolution, he became the chairman of the All-Russian Union of Writers, and from 1921 he headed the literary section of the State Academy of Arts.
