Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) is an American artist who studied art at the beginning of the 20th century along with the famous Edward Hopper. Kent is also known as a writer, an illustrator, and most importantly - an adventurer. In the period from 1929 to 1935, he visited Greenland three times.
The first trip to Greenland was full of dangers. In 1929, Kent went there from Newfoundland on a small sailing bot with two young Americans. The route passed through Davis Strait. 30 kilometers south of Nuuk, not far from the now abandoned village of Narsak, men fell into an unprecedented storm, but by some miracle they still stuck to the shore. They managed to get to Nuuk, where Kent decided to stay for several months to write a Greenland nature, and at the same time get acquainted with the locals who immediately made a deep impression on him.
The artist liked the landscapes of Greenland and the people of this region so much that he promised himself to return at the first opportunity.
During the next two trips, Kent lived in the village of Illorsut on the island of the Upkent Aylann, washed by the waters of Uummannak-Fjord. He stayed there from the summer of 1931 to the fall of 1932 and from the fall of 1934 to the summer of 1935. During these long trips, the artist managed to get closer to local residents and get acquainted with their lifestyle. Most of the Greenland acquaintances of Kent had respect for him. Despite the language barrier, many years of friendship connected him with many of them. This was confirmed to me by the descendants of several Greenland families who knew the artist closely.
I set myself the task of telling about the work of Rocuella Kent, inspired by Greenland, through the exhibition of his works and the book, “When the color is more than color ", including photographs from the artist’s archive, as well as reproductions of some of his Greenland paintings.
