The engraving is the youngest and democratic form of world fine art. If in Europe this method of creating images appeared at the turn of the XIV - XV centuries, then the history of Russian engraving originates in the 16th century, but only in the XVIII century did this genre reach Russia in Russia. By the order of Emperor Peter I, foreign masters were invited here, who trained local artists with new techniques for them. And soon the whole world spoke of Russian engravers. G. A. Kachalov, Ya. V. Vasiliev, A. G. Ukhtomsky, E.P. Chemesov, D. G. Gerasimov, I.P. Glavestin, A. O. Orlovsky, V.V. Mathe, L. A. Seryakov and many other brilliant masters of engraver made a significant contribution to the development of this type of art. Engraved portraits, folk and satirical pictures, landscape and genre scenes, as well as book illustrations of our artists not only enriched this type of fine art with new expressive means, but also gave the world a lot of real masterpieces.
