The book of the outstanding Polish pianist and composer Vladislav Spielman talks about difficult trials that fell to his lot during the Second World War at the Warsaw ghetto. He did not just try to survive, but, as far as he could, participated in the resistance to the enemy who came to his native land. However, later it was the help of a German officer who allowed him to escape. Excerpts from the diaries of that same officer, Wilm Koozenfeld, are also included in the publication and serve as an important addition to what Spilman writes about. The book served as the basis of the famous film, set by Roman Polanski
