In childhood, we took pencils to draw in the line or indicate the details and paints to paint some area. We acted intuitively without hesitation. And then they learned that there was a difference between “graphics” and “painting”, and here the difficulties began.
Now we are supposed to find (or come up with) an abstract circuit even where it is not there, and already with the first strokes to take into account all aspects at once: proportions and perspectives, contrast and texture, general whole and details. Graphics and painting are completely different things!
You think this is so? I think no.
In classical painting, a graphic pattern usually performs the function of a sketch. First they make a sketch, then it is transferred to the canvas, they write with oil on top of it, and as a result, the sketch is completely hidden under the paint, giving way to the “real”, that is, a picturesque picture. Learning to draw, we voluntarily or involuntarily keep in mind such a separation.
I will say right away: this separation seems meaningless to me.
In addition, the border between these genres is blurred in any case. Using the color explains the difference between graphics and painting is not fully: if the drawing is created using colored pencils - will it be painting? The drawing can be painted with both markers and watercolors, and vice versa-picturesque techniques are often embodied in a black and white palette. Sometimes painting is simply a drawing with paints, and graphics - painting with a very small brush. Almost all the paintings created by us ultimately contain both elements of graphics and painting. For these reasons, the traditional separation of genres is seen in impractical.
City sketches, illustration and drawing have been highly popular for several years. And the more people are interested in these ways of self -expression, the more relevant the question of how best to learn drawing and painting. I am convinced that when solving many visual problems, both genres are much more effective than approaching them only on one side.
Thus, this book is not about graphic drawing in its pure form and not about painting. I think that the best paintings are obtained as a result of the equal use of both techniques. And it is better to learn one and another at the same time. If some things have always been done in a certain way, this does not always mean that such solutions are optimal and meet the requirements of time.
Therefore, I propose to abandon some remnants of the past and decisively mix genres. In fact, drawing and painting are not just a brother and sister, but twins who go in different ways to the same goal: to create good paintings.
