Max Ernst (1891-1976) is an outstanding German and French artist, a prominent representative of the art of the twentieth century. He studied philosophy, literature, art history and psychology at the University of Bonn. During the First World War, he was mobilized into the current German army. The war turned out to be a strong traumatic experience for him. Returning home, Ernst joined the circle of the Dadaists and began to develop the ideas of this movement in Cologne. In 1922 he moved to Paris, where he soon became one of the brightest representatives of the new artistic trend - surrealism. Invented innovative art techniques - Frottage and Grattage. After the outbreak of World War II, he moved to the United States, where he continued to experiment with art techniques. In 1950 he returned to France. The exhibition in the State Hermitage is dedicated to the short key period in the life and work of the artist-the 1920s, which Ernst spent in France.
