The publication was prepared for the exhibition held at the Museum on September 4 - October 28, 2018. The city culture of the Edo period (1603–1868) has become one of the most striking phenomena in the history of Japan. The world"s offensive after many years of wars contributed to the intensive economic development of the country, the centers of which were cities with a rapidly growing population. It was the tastes and requests of citizens, mainly - energetic entrepreneurial people from the lower classes, which largely determined the spirit and nature of the culture of this era. The exhibition in the PHMI introduced the audience with Japanese painting and graphics of the Edo period, capturing the holidays and everyday life of urban residents, their classes, travel, popular folklore and literary plots. The catalog presents wonderful samples of different directions in the visual arts of that time. Shirms, scrolls, album sheets of leading masters of Kano, Tos, Rimpa, Maruayama-Sidzo, as well as Bunzing (“Painting of Intellectuals”), Ukiyo-e (genre painting and graphics) and the work of experts artists give an idea of the diversity of artistic movements of the period Edo formed as a result of the synthesis of old traditions and new trends.
