This book is dedicated to one of the most striking and original artists of the last century - Mark Zakharovich Shagalu. His work is shown through the prism of philosophical categories of myth and epic, understood as the most general principles of organizing artistic thinking. The author for the first time demonstrates the phenomenon of the transition from myth to the epic in the framework of the painting of the twentieth century.
In the early works of Shagal, the mythological principle is dominated by both with traditional Hasidic culture and with a common interest in primitive thinking for all avant -garde art. During the First World War, the work of the master includes historical problems, which later becomes a full -fledged epic. The synthesis of the myth and epic in Shagal was discussed in detail in the book on the example of the paintings of his "biblical message".
