Evgeny Semenovich Steiner is a Japanist, candidate of philological sciences, doctor of art history. He worked in the Plane named after A. S. Katsusika Hokusai (1760–1849) is one of the most famous Japanese artists of the Edo period. Throughout his life, he published albums of engraved drawings called “manga”. In fifteen outlets with four thousand figures and motives, Hokusai presented the encyclopedia of old Japan in pictures - from the gods and heroes of antiquity to modern amorous deeds, households and a variety of natural views. The commented publication “manga”, by the fullness of illustrations and historical comments, has no analogues in the world.
The author is convinced that the cultural and historical explanation is absolutely necessary in many cases. “Hokusai manga”, although it was written not by hieroglyphs, but “patterned letter”, needs to be translated - from the language of Japanese historical and mythological plots, as well as other people"s cultural realities of two hundred years ago.
