Kenneth Clark (1903–1983) is an English art historian, a lecturer, an outstanding specialist in the field of the art of the Renaissance, the youngest director of the London National Gallery in history, who held this post from 1934 to 1945. The popularity of Clark is not limited to an academic circle. The documentary series “Civilization” (1969), shot by the BBC and soon already broadcast around the world brought him wide fame.
In 1946, Clark received the honorary title of professor of the School of Elegant Arts Slade in Oxford. The lectures read by him to the students of the school formed the basis of the book “Landscape in Art”, first published in 1949. The characteristic features of its author"s style were fully manifested here: incredible erudition and virtuoso ability and large -scale generalizations, thanks to which the processes unwanted in their grandeur. They appear in the form of a series of bright and visual examples, correctness in handling the material, from the first phrases issuing a great scientist, soft academic humor. And of course, the fascinating conviction that art is an integral part of life, the material manifestation of the greatness of the human spirit, which all the co -shaking and shaking humanity of the cataclysms are powerless
