The book proposed to the attention of the reader represents a peculiar set of iconographic options for the image of Jesus Christ, accompanied by a scientific-historical commentary of their genesis and development. The Holy Scriptures, liturgical and theological texts represent the literary foundation on which the visual language of Orthodox art was formed. Medieval chronicles and stories of pilgrims with a description of ancient shrines help to better understand the spiritual environment and aesthetic perception of people of that distant time. The work is built on the study of numerous monuments with the image of Christ, covering a variety of genres of fine art throughout the huge chronological period - from the first centuries of Christianity to modern times. The publication is equipped with a rich illustrative material: monuments of monumental painting, mosaics, icons, book miniature, objects of applied art.
The book is an attempt to make a study of domestic and foreign scientists on the image of Christ available for a wide range of readers. It can be used as a textbook and is intended for teachers of Christian art, culturalists, icon painters and students
