From the author
I tried to convey my love for simple miniatures and developed step -by -step projects available to students of any level. Each picture can be drawn in less than an hour.
I clearly remember how, being a twenty -year -old student of the Art College, I once spent the whole day in the National Gallery in Washington. I wandered around the halls whose walls were hung with great classic canvases - huge paintings by Mark Rotko, Caravaggio, Albert Birstadt. Previously, I saw them only in the form of reproductions in textbooks on the history of art, and the real scale stunned me.
And then the unexpected happened: I entered a small cozy hall, where several small paintings hung on the walls. I peered into these miniature canvases, and one thing especially attracted my attention: the self-portrait of the French artist Henri Fanten Latura. “How is it possible,” I thought, so that this modest small portrait becomes in a museum full of multi -meter masterpieces? ”
From that day I was imbued with love for little paintings. The best samples of miniatures are straightforward and greatly affect the viewer. The small picture has less space for unnecessary details, so it is more direct, clear and charming. Monumental canvases often lack this.
