The classic work of the English art historian Herbert Reed (1893-1968), first published in English in 1959 and since then regularly reprinted all over the world, overlaps the main directions and trends of European and American painting of the late XIX-XX century. Based to the author to the 1950s, later he was supplemented by the head dedicated to the development of picturesque art in the next decade and published in the Russian translation for the first time. The publication is addressed to art critics, culturalists and all interested in the history of art and culture of the 20th century
