Maria Konstantinovna Bashkirtseva (1858–1884) is equally known both as an artist and as an author of the “Diary” presented in our series.
Maria was born in the Poltava province. After the divorce of her parents, she, together with her mother, goes abroad and at the same time, in 1873, begins to keep a diary in French - a detailed, incredibly sincere, written without excessive shyness and timidity, designed in one intonation and testified in details about the life of a young Girls of the late XIX century, who became an artist and who died at the age of 26 from tuberculosis.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the “Diary” was very popular and discussed, and from the moment Elizabeth Dyakonova, the no less famous “Diary” came out, the comparisons and disputes around these two publications did not subside for a long time. Among fans of literary work of Bashkirtseva, M. Tsvetaeva, who devoted her collection of poems, V. Khlebnikov, V. Bryusov, who wrote about Bashkirtseva, can be called her: “She is myself with all my beliefs and dreams.”
