The story "Double" and the story "Mr. Prokharchin" was written by Dostoevsky, by definition of I. Annensky, "before the catastrophe", that is, before the arrest of Petrashevtsev and the civil execution at the Semenov Place in St. Petersburg (1849).
In the story "double" (1846) Dostoevsky, a deep psychological analysis of a split consciousness, an analysis that foreshadows the coming great novels of the writer is given. The tale "double" is largely related to the artistic world and the poetics of Gogol Petersburg leaders. We can say that the fantastic and incomprehensible St. Petersburg of Romanov Dostoevsky originates in this story. It is not by chance that after all the story has a subtitle "Petersburg poem".
Mr. Prokharchin (1846) is the history of a man who died of fear (I. Annensky) The main motive of the story is "unbearable for the naive soul struggle with the fear of life" (I. Annensky).
It can be said that in these early works, the suffering of a person was brought by Dostoevsky to a straight line of fantastic diversity.
