Mr. Dombey, the owner of a large and successful firm, has finally had a son. Mr. Dombey is happy, for now the name of his firm, "Dombey and Son," reflects reality. He can now pass on the business by inheritance, and the succession of generations will not be disrupted! Everything else is insignificant to Mr. Dombey. He is not saddened by the death of his wife, he is indifferent to his daughter, for all this has no relation to the future of the firm. All his thoughts are on his son, who, alas, turns out to be weak in health, and this threatens the fulfillment of the father's dreams. Is Mr. Dombey capable of understanding what is truly important in life? Can he change before it's too late?
This novel by Charles Dickens (1812—1870), a classic of English literature, touches on themes characteristic of the writer: the relationships between fathers and children, social inequality, as well as the search for higher justice, which often can only be achieved after many years.
