In addition to several literary awards, Olgerd Baharevich received one very unusual award for 'Dogs of Europe' - a Reader's Prize specially established for him, which grateful fans awarded him for 'raising contemporary Belarusian literature to a completely new level'. This level inherently implies transcending nationality, moving beyond language barriers. And the happily bilingual author, as if wanting to solidify the height he had reached, rewrote his novel anew, making it accessible to a wider readership - the Russian-speaking audience. By the way, his great predecessor and compatriot Vasil Bykov always did the same. What we have here is a whimsical knot of six stories - where cities and languages, people and plots, verses and traumas, snippets of quotes and fabricated memories enter into strange alchemical reactions. Olgerd Baharevich's 'Dogs of Europe' is a novel about human and national solitude, about illusions - about a state that doesn't need the past and is confident it can cancel the future, about the dictatorship of words, the periphery of the empire, and its European melancholy. The publishing house 'Vremya' nominates the novel 'Dogs of Europe' for the 'Big Book' award.
