Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) was a well-known Russian prose writer and poet, a Nobel Prize laureate, who experienced both success and persecution from his fellow countrymen. "Doctor Zhivago" is a story of the wanderings, hardships, and spiritual growth of the Russian doctor and poet Yuri Zhivago against the backdrop of the grand events of the first third of the 20th century - World War I, the revolution, the Civil War, the era of War Communism, and the New Economic Policy (NEP). The hero's apparent external composure conceals an unwavering commitment to principles of sacrifice and non-acceptance of violence.
