Doctor Faustus (1943) is one of the most significant books of the 20th century. The old German legend of Dr. Johann Faustus, who sold his soul to the devil, takes on the features of a mysterious allegorical novel under the pen of Thomas Mann. It tells the story of a young talented composer, Leverkühn, who, whether in reality or in his imagination, made a similar deal with the Darkness: everyone he loves will perish, and his genius will bring nothing but misfortune to people.
