The work of the French sociologist, cultural theorist, and postmodern philosopher Jean Baudrillard (1929-2007) presents an analysis of the political landscape in the context of mass media culture, electronic communications, and technological development, using the example of the political life of France from 1977 to 1984. Essentially, it is a theory of simulacra as it operates in the political sphere, where parties no longer truly compete with each other in an ideological sense, politicians turn their speeches into well-calculated performances, and society prefers spectacle over actual governance.
