The book is the first systematic and generalizing review of the political thought of the 20th century - both in the West and in eastern Europe, written since the end of the Cold War. Masterfully combining the intellectual and political history, Jan-twin Müller sheds new light on the concept, which led to a fierce ideological struggle until 1945, and after the end of World War II, which became a negative guideline in the development and conduct of a course for the liberalization of Western European political life. The author draws bright portraits of both well -known and undeservedly forgotten political thinkers, as well as the social movements and institutions inspired by them. Müller pays special attention to ideas that advanced to justify fascism and Nazism, as well as intellectual foundations of liberal democracy in post -war Western Europe. The book also tells about the consequences of the events and ideas of the 1960s, about the influence of neoliberalism, and it ends with a critical assessment of the onset of the posteological era.
The book is designed for a wide range of readers interested in the history of political thought in Europe of the 20th century
