The project "Director's Notebooks" emerged after analyzing the archives and video library of the theater. Petr Naumovich Fomenko was a man of book culture, with magnificent erudition, and spoke beautifully. His rehearsals were not only real lessons in directing and acting skills, but also a treasure trove of knowledge in literature, history, and true wisdom of life. Rehearsals and working on texts took up all of the Master's time. Therefore, he did not keep diaries, director's notebooks, or notes, apart from everyday work-related ones. Consequently, the video archive of his rehearsals is the only way today to understand his methods and principles of work, his school, and to grasp the secrets of his mastery. Unfortunately, the theater's video archive is very incomplete. Due to objective reasons, recordings of rehearsals of early performances at the "Master's Workshop," rehearsals from the late 90s to the early 2000s are extremely fragmentary, and rehearsals of some plays, such as "Forgive Us, Jean-Baptiste" and "Dead Souls," are completely absent. However, even recordings of several rehearsals can often provide a complete and clear understanding of how the performance was created, why the Master chose that particular work for staging. The director's notebook of the play "One Absolutely Happy Village" consists of two parts. In the first part, we publish the text of the staging based on the story of the same name by Boris Vakhtin - a long-time friend of Petr Naumovich Fomenko. As for the rehearsals of the play, we only have a few video fragments of Evgeny Tsyganov's introduction to the role of Mikheev, from which it is impossible to create a complete picture of the work on the performance. However, we tried to show the rehearsal process directly, selecting the most characteristic recordings from the very modest video material, illustrating one or another method of the Master's work.
