The main events of Charles Dickens “Hard times” (1854) unfold in the small industrial town of Kokstown in North England, where, due to circumstances, interests and hopes, pragmatic calculations and disinterested dreams of people belonging to different layers of society are closely intertwined. Sir Thomas Gradedrand, the owner of the school with a special “practical” education system, a sober person, an adherent of accurate numbers and facts, accepts Jup for the family sessions - the daughter of an old circus clown, a girl with a kind heart and living imagination. The eldest daughter of Grandynda Louise, at the insistence of his father, who married the elderly banker of the manufacturer Bounterby, helps weaver Stephen Blackpul, who lost his job and accused her brother Tom, and at a critical moment of his own life finds comfort and support from sessions. The owner of the circus Mr. Sliki saves Tom, put on the wanted list ... Living human feelings overcome the estate partitions over and over again, leading to the collapse of false values and to the disclosure of long -standing family secrets
