Dictionary of toponymic periphrases: names of Russian cities

The materials of the dictionary consist of a lexicographical description of periphrases that replace the names of various cities in Russia. A periphrasis is a special type of fixed expression, a descriptive phrase that names something secondarily. Toponymic periphrases are widely used and have consistently high frequency in media texts. Periphrases not only eliminate tautology but also enhance the expressiveness and informativeness of the publication, attracting the attention of readers. For example: the city of rains and fogs, the Volga Atlantis, the city of the Russian heart, the capital of the boot kingdom, the cradle of Russian chemistry, little Stalingrad, Siberian Paris, and others. An integral part of the periphrastic corpus of the media are both figurative and non-figurative periphrases, which contain ethnographic information (the city of gas workers, the city on the Lovat River, the city-satellite of Makhachkala, the homeland of Alexandra Pakhmutova, etc.). The dictionary is intended for media workers, as well as anyone interested in the history and culture of Russian cities.
