Valentin Fedorovich Bulgakov (1886-1966), a 24-year-old student of the Faculty of Historical and Philology of Moscow University, spent perhaps the most difficult year of his life near Tolstoy. A year of painful experiences, fatal and sorrowful events, when the contradictions tormented by the writer for many years, weaved into one knot and led to a tragic denouement. And therefore, a delicate, friendly intonation with which this wise young man talks about his idol and his environment seems especially valuable: calmly, without tearing and at the same time in detail and sincerely.
After the death of Tolstoy Bulgakov, at the request of Sofia Andreevna, he helped her to disassemble the manuscripts of the writer, and then controlled the Tolstoy Museum in Moscow for several years. However, his active participation in the Committee of the Starring in 1921 led to arrest and expulsion from Russia on a "philosophical steamer".
In exile, in Prague, he headed the Union of Russian Writers in the Czech Republic, helped Marina Tsvetaeva. In 1941, Bulgakov was sent to the Bavarian concentration camp, Vaisenburg, from where, after liberation in 1945, he returned to Prague, and then, in 1948, to the USSR. After that, for almost twenty years, he was the keeper of the museum-estate in Yasnaya Polyana.
The first edition of the diary entitled "at L.N. Tolstoy in the last year of his life" was published in 1911, but since all the characters were still alive, the diary was published in a very abbreviated form. In 1920, an expanded edition was published, but some silence and abbreviations still remained, and finally, the full text of the diary saw the light only in 1957
