"The Revolution Betrayed" is one of Trotsky's most famous works, with the author himself calling it the "main work of his life." Written during his forced exile in Norway, the book is dedicated to analyzing the Soviet political regime and predicting its further development. Unrestrained in his formulations, Trotsky vehemently settles scores with his main opponent, Joseph Stalin, asserting that the "lead rear of bureaucracy outweighed the head of the revolution," turning the country into a "deformed workers' state." The book was translated into several foreign languages during the author's lifetime and was reprinted multiple times, but in the USSR, "The Revolution Betrayed" was banned and first appeared in Russian only in 1991, a few months before the collapse of the country.
