Josephine Tay (real name Elizabeth Makintosh, 1896–1952) - the famous writer, daughter of the Scotsman and Englishwoman, recognized master of the British detective. In 1929, she debuted with the book “Man from the line”, in which the inspector of Scotland Yard Alan Grant first appeared (later the hero of her five more novels) The inspector trusts his own intuition, but not undividedly: he carefully weighs all the evidence, carefully listens to eyewitnesses, and even if, it would seem, everything testifies against the suspect, Alan Grant will not leave any evidence unverified. In a word, finding himself in a difficult situation, anyone would dream of such a bona fide police inspector! The collection includes three novels from the cycle: “A killer in a crowd, or a man from the queue” (1929), “Shilling on the candles” (1936) and “Betty Kane’s abduction” (1948) Based on the second of them, Alfred Hitchcock in 1937 shot the film “Young and Innocent”, according to the novel “The Betty Kane’s Abduction” Film version of 1951 and 1962 (under the name “The Franchise Affair”) and the 1988 television series
