New York is amazed at a series of brutal murders marked with the same handwriting. The press claims that the killer is a moralist addressing to society a message. A whole team of detectives led by Lieutenant Vincent d’Agost is involved in the investigation, with the participation of a special FBI agent, Aloisia Pendergast. The investigation is unsuccessfully trying to establish a connection between the victims, but they are so far from each other that it is difficult to imagine a common motive for murders.
