College Advisor Lykov guilty before his superiors. The bandits killed in Odessa parents of his assistant Sergei Assedopulo. And he attracted to the search for the murderers of Sergey himself, and did not send to St. Petersburg, as they were ordered. As a punishment, Lykov was sent to the Turukhansky Territory. From there, the shoots of exiles became more frequent, we must find out how they manage to disappear to run from such a modified place. Arriving at the Arctic Circle, the detective will find out that the shoots are put on the stream. And somewhere in the vicinity of Irkutsk, the Rubiles for the Fugitives are hidden. In them, the elite of the criminal world sits out, changes its appearance, receives new documents. And when the police stops their searches, the bandits return to large cities. No wonder Irkutsk is called the capital of fugitives. Lykov decides to go there in order to find and destroy the stash.

The main character of all works, the plot of which dates back to the end of the 19th - early XX centuries, is Alexei Lykov. In addition to this fictional hero, historical characters are introduced into the effect of novels and stories - civilian officials and military officials, real subjects of the Russian Empire of those years. All books are built on carefully studied and neatly selected historical materials.

“The book of Nikolai Svechin is perfectly written. But I would not say that this is the new Akunin. Although the presence of the king of the modern Russian detective is felt there. In the main character, the detective of Alexei Lykov, I found a certain symbiosis of Fandorin and Romanov - two heroes of different Akunin series. Alexei Lykov is such a Nizhny Novgorod superman of the second half of the 19th century, which combines the Fandorin mind and Romanov’s simple -mindedness.
The main character of the candle is quite organic (as far as it allows such an artificial genre as a detective) grows from Nizhny Novgorod, the trade capital of Russia of the XIX century. Lykov-a participant in the Russo-Turkish war, was wounded, came to the Nizhny Novgorod police to continue to serve his homeland. And he immediately fell into a binding, from which he miraculously emerges alive ... in the rank of deputy head of the Nizhny Novgorod detective. The story is fantastic and, of course, invented through and through. But you believe in it, because it is not the hero himself that captures, but the place and time in which the hero acts.
Svechin’s novel belongs to the genre of "ethnic detective". It is not a detective, but an ethnographic component in it. ” - Pavel Basinsky

Svechin"s books are a synthesis of a retro detective and popular local history. You can call this suck a “regional retro detective” (and alliteration will turn out to be good) The action always takes place in the native author of Nizhny Novgorod and its environs. Most of the stories, as I understand it, are taken from life (that is, from documents), and therefore, in the plump terms, candles are not very expressive.
The language is diligently stylized. True, sometimes the pearls of almost Kolyadinsky come across: “I wrote to the sovereign! Uselessly. I received goodwill for a responsible civil position ... ”, but there are very few such obvious blunders. But the little flea philologist will gain a whole handful here. The word One cannot relate to the brothers Yarmonkin, since it means female faces. The word “circled”-folk-poetic, long outdated, and in the 19th century it could be used only by the epics, but not peasants in everyday speech, etc.
The atmosphere is pleasant. The gentlemen with surnames like Petrovo-Solovovo-and even (not lying!) Golenishchev-Kutuzov-Tolstoy-sedately drink Shustovsky and have a bite with ice cream persimmon
