London, 1860. A silent January night, a terrible scream spread through the narrow dirty lanes of Saint-Jeles, one of the most poor and dangerous areas of the city. The police who came running to the noise found two battered respectably dressed gentlemen. One of them was dead, the other barely breathed. Sergeant John Iven urgently delivered the victim to the hospital. The damage on his body was terrible, and most importantly, he was speechless and could not tell anything. Who are these two, and why did they wandered there at night, where people from their class do not show up even during the day? Iven does not know what to grab for and where to start. But he knows exactly who is able to answer all these questions. This is a former police inspector, and now a private detective William Monk
