As a child, the future writer Nikolai Vnukov was read out by the books of Stevenson and Dumas, Fenimore Cooper and Jack London. From the uncle, who served on the imperial yacht, became infected with love for the sea and ships. He went to the front very young, after the war he worked as a cartographer with a topograph in search parties in the Far East, and a little later - he taught at the technical school of marine instrumentation.

So, from personal experience and real history, this book has developed about what a person really needs to survive. The story was translated into many languages, and in Japan recognized as young readers the best work of 1988.
