Lizzy Martin comes to London at the invitation of his godfather"s wife to become her companion. On the way to the house where she has to live, she sees the cart on which the corpse lies. Lizzy considers such a meeting an ominous omen. Later it turns out that this is the body of the murdered Madelin Hekesem, a former companion, whose place is destined to take Lizzy. Lizzy, a brave and straightforward girl, is at risk, deciding to independently find out who killed her predecessor. From Scotlandyard, the investigation is conducted by inspector Ben Ross.
