The detective novel of the English writer Ellis Peters (1913-1995) from the series about the investigations of the detective-amateur brother of Kadfael. The Bonel family comes to the Benedictine monastery with the intention to bequeath the monastery of their possessions in exchange for a lifelong boarding house. Suddenly, Gervas Bonel gets sick. Kadfael, a skilled doctor and herbalist, hurries to help the patient, but all his efforts are in vain: Bonel dies. The surprises do not end there.
