The novel takes place in 1896, on the eve and during the coronation of Emperor Nicholas II. Mikhail, four -year -old son of Grand Duke Georgy Alexandrovich, was stolen. The kidnapper calling himself "Dr. Lind" requires a diamond of Count Orlov, which is decorated with an imperial scepter. If the deal does not take place, the child will be returned to parents in parts. But a coronation cannot take place without a scepter. Erast Petrovich Fandorin begins to save the honor of the monarchy.
