1911, the end of the hot summer, St. Petersburg. The head of the capital"s criminal police Vladimir Gavrilovich Filippov, together with his assistant Alexander Pavlovich Sviridov, is investigated by the strange suicide of the teacher of the University of Sergei Zimin. A series of murders of people associated with Zimin is woven into the investigation, and the political views of both Zimin himself and his killed acquaintances pop up.
