An anonymous call enters the Los Angeles police: the body of the unknown was found in the waste pipe on the Dam. It looks like a typical death of a drug addict from an overdose. But the brilliant flair of the policeman helps Detective Harry Bosch to notice what others do not see. He is sure that this man was killed, and before his death they tortured. The Bosch recognizes the murdered - twenty years ago they fought together in Vietnam, such soldiers were called tunnel rats. Who needed to kill a war veteran who was even more densely sitting on the needle? What secret did he hide? When it turns out that the FBI is interested in the murder, and Harry himself is removed from the investigation, he decides to catch the killer using his own methods. This becomes a matter of honor for him.
