Professor of physics at the University of Dorpat, Georg Friedrich Parrot (1767–1852), is remembered not only as a scientist but also as a conversationalist and friend of Emperor Alexander I. Their correspondence is a rare example of a close friendship between an autocratic ruler and his subject, genuinely interested in progressive changes in the country. In response to Parrot's unwavering loyalty, Alexander I entrusted him with important state secrets, such as sharing his intention to grant Russia a constitution or discussing the fate of the accused traitor Speransky. The book by historian A. Andreev introduces for the first time into scholarly circulation over 200 preserved texts of letters, translated into Russian, with detailed comments and annotated indexes. The publication of the letters is preceded by a comprehensive historical study dedicated to the relationship between Alexander I and Parrot, as well as the mysterious fate of their correspondence, which offers a new perspective on the history of Russia at the beginning of the 19th century. Andrey Andreev is a Doctor of Historical Sciences, a professor at the Department of Russian History from the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century at the Faculty of History of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov.
