We present to the domestic reader one of the volumes of the fundamental work of the outstanding sinologist Jan Jacob Maria de Groot, "The Religious System of China," dedicated to the demonology of ancient China. In terms of its subject matter, this study is directly related to the Chinese views on the soul and spirit, on their afterlife existence. De Groot considers the main feature of Chinese religiosity to be "universalistic animism," where universalism reflects the common paradigm of folk beliefs, rituals, and the ritualistic side of the state cult of imperial China, while animism extends to animatism. Among the undeniable merits of de Groot's work, one should mention its extensive source base, which is simply fantastic in terms of its volume and scope, as well as the fact that the outstanding Dutch scholar managed to touch upon the living folk tradition of beliefs and ideas about the soul, which have not been dulled by either Chinese Marxism or the cultural revolution. The book is written in a transparent and clear language, and the ancient Chinese plots simply captivate with their fantastical and extravagant nature, making it recommendable not only to sinologists but also to a wide range of readers.
