The exercises described in the book allow you to develop basic schema therapy skills, increase competence, and form personal therapeutic styles. The goal of this book is to make deliberate practice an additional element of schema therapy training. Such practice will help students incorporate schema therapy skills into their repertoire, enabling them to access them automatically. The book presents basic skills that do not claim to be comprehensive. Deliberate practice is not the only format of learning that leads to competence in schema therapy; it is a complement to other teaching methods and supervision. The book provides a teaching method designed to enhance the effectiveness of applying complex skills in work settings. Deliberate practice is experiential, repetitive training of a specific skill until it becomes automatic. In the context of psychotherapy, this involves role-playing between two students in the roles of client and therapist, switching roles under the guidance of a supervisor. The trainee in the therapist role responds to the "client" with improvisations reflecting fundamental therapeutic skills of varying levels of complexity. This book contains descriptions of individual role-playing games in which two students take turns playing the roles of client and therapist under the supervision of a supervisor. The practicing therapist improvises appropriate and authentic responses to the client's statements, categorized into three levels of complexity: basic, intermediate, and advanced. The process reflects common issues faced by schema therapists. The first 12 exercises focus on skills derived from the three stages of schema therapy (attachment and emotional regulation, mode change, and autonomy) and include limited reparenting, schema-focused psychoeducation, coping modes, and empathic confrontation. This is followed by two comprehensive exercises - an annotated script and an imitation of therapeutic sessions in a free form - in which practitioners integrate basic skills into one session. Step-by-step instructions guide learners through the exercises, define mastery criteria for each skill, and explain how to monitor and adjust the therapeutic process. Recommendations are also provided to help instructors and students get the most out of the sessions. Key themes of the book include: - Theoretical information on the schema approach and coping modes - Instructions for deliberate practice - Detailed description of exercises - Role-playing with modes, mode dialogues - Annotated script of a schema therapy session - Staging a schema therapy session - Appendices with forms and tables
