Alexander Sergeevich Damnitsyn (1841-1896)-musicologist, composer, professor of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He was one of the first researchers of Russian and Slavic folklore. His works in the field of Slavic musical creativity and mythology are so serious and deep that today we can evaluate them as scientifically significant and in our own way innovative. The book “deities of the ancient Slavs” (1884), according to the author, was supposed to be the first part of extensive labor, unfortunately not realized. Damnitsyn, relying on the musical pagan Slavic heritage, explores the cosmogonic component of pagan Slavic culture. He believes that in the Slavic folk songs a large number of references to archaic mythological representations, cosmological at its core, have been preserved. The ancient gods of the Slavs, according to the scientist, were present in these songs as really existing ideas and images. The book “deities of the ancient Slavs” today is an important and relevant study not only for professional scientists, but also for all those interested in the history of the pagan Slavic religion
