"The Rout" by Alexander Fadeev is one of the most famous novels dedicated to the Civil War. It was written shortly after its end and is largely autobiographical: in 1919-1921, the future writer, who at that time was a Red commissar, took part in military actions in the Far East. It is a story of defeat and death of a partisan detachment, told vividly and truthfully. Initially received ambiguously, the novel was later included in the school curriculum and has undergone hundreds of reprints. During the Soviet era, "The Rout" was interpreted as a work about the moral victory of the communist idea. However, the novel about the Civil War, depicted in all its profound contradictions and drama, managed to outlive its time and remain a universally recognized classic of Russian literature. The edition also includes stories and tales by A. Fadeev such as "The Flood," "The Birth of the Amgun Regiment," "Earthquake," and "On Poverty and Wealth."
