Herman Melville (1819-1891) is a classic of American literature, an outstanding romantic writer.
The novel 'The Confidence Man: His Masquerade', published in 1857, is one of the last major artistic works of Herman Melville. Most literary critics of that time were reserved in their reception of this novel and laid the foundation for the widespread view that it is an example of social satire, where Melville exposes the hypocritical piety of a significant number of Americans, behind which lies personal greed and a thirst for profit.
The novel is published in Russian for the first time in a complete translation and with comments.
