America in the 1940s, the height of World War II. At the center of the story is a man named Hertz Minsker, a unique hybrid of a philosopher-existentialist, religious thinker, and psychoanalytic theorist, rejecting all categories in favor of what he calls "the study of man" - a mixture of reflections on humanity and its aspirations. Minsker cannot finish any book he starts, yet some of the Jewish emigrants, speaking Yiddish like him, consider him a failed genius, a lost soul from a renowned rabbinical family, as he constantly borrows money from his wife, friends, and lovers, but has the potential to become a great man. Minsker is surrounded by equally lost people - his best friend, a businessman who often provides him with financial support, the wife of this businessman, a poet with a penchant for writing, eager to break into the world of Yiddish literature, a spiritualist housewife who arranges fake seances for Minsker, and his wife, living in constant depression because she left her husband and children in Poland and ran away to America with Hertz. The novel follows the actions of these and other characters, while Minsker turns their already complicated personal lives into complete chaos.
