After the success of the Cuban Revolution, partisan movements spread throughout Latin America. The local oligarchy and the ruling American military in the region did everything to prevent their success. To combat communist partisans, so-called 'death squads' were created - secret units consisting of mercenaries, bandits, and ultra-right militants. Their tasks included fighting the 'red threat,' terrorizing 'unreliable' peasants, and assassinating dissenters. The death squads became infamous for unprecedented cruelty, sometimes entirely senseless. Their crimes were often compared to the atrocities of Hitler's executioners. The brutality of the squads continued for over half a century, leaving monstrous bloody wounds on the bodies of Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Argentina, and other Latin American countries. After the collapse of the USSR, the terror of the 'squads' did not disappear into the past. Following the decline of partisan movements in Latin America, the 'squads' shifted their focus to combating peaceful opposition. They continue to spread terror across all of Latin America.
