A great poem, a celebration of absurdity and grotesque, from which paradoxically the history of Russian realism is counted. Planning a three-part work following the example of the "Divine Comedy," Gogol only managed to complete the first volume - in which he introduced a new hero to literature, a swindler and rogue, and created the immortal image of Russia as a troika bird, rushing in an unknown direction.
"The main books of Russian literature" is a joint series of the publishing house "Alpina. Proza" and the internet project "Polka." The works that are published in it are selected by contemporary writers, critics, literary scholars, and teachers. This is an attempt to define what the Russian literary canon looks like today and a new perspective on well-known works: each book is accompanied by an introduction by the authors of "Polka."
