The poem "Dead Souls" was translated into many other languages during the author's lifetime. It had incredible success. No one before or after Gogol was able to describe the vices and weaknesses of the Russian people so vividly and sharply, to reflect the most important problems for Russia so vividly and truthfully. 160 years have passed, and the poem sounds as if it were just written. Chichikovs, Korobochkas, Nozdrevs, Plyushkins, Sobakevichs - their aspirations, feelings, actions do not seem to us echoes of the past. These characters acquire a modern and sharp sound when we watch all the new plays and films based on this immortal poem.
