The foreign policy of the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th century has much shifted from Europe to Asia. This can explain the accession to Russia of a number of Central Asian states, for example, Khiva, Bukhara and Cokand, and bringing to the oath of loyalty to the Russian king of the native aristocracy of these lands.
One of the participants in the military expeditions in the hot and arid lands of Central Asia was Alexei Nikolaevich Kuropatkin, chief of staff of the famous General Skobelev. In his memoirs about these campaigns, he talks in detail about the difficulties with which the Russian troops had to face, describes the life and customs of the peoples with whom the expedition participants had to meet, and gives a completely exhaustive characteristic to hostile tribes that prevented the Russians in every possible way to achieve the goal.
