This book is unique in its own way. On the cartographic material, the theme of “wonders”, protected places, and unusual natural phenomena of Russia were not specifically considered either in domestic or foreign literature. The basis of the book was maps of the XIII - XIX centuries, emerging from the best workshops of Europe. On an old map, saturated with miniatures and equipped with detailed legends, you can see a reflection of knowledge, fantasies, fears and hopes of cartographers, their customers and spectators. On the map, the mysterious corners of distant countries inhabited by various monsters were certainly noted. And such places as Europeans were confident, mysterious Russia is replete. This book about how the Europeans imagined our country, what interested and worried them, what they expected from the unknown Muscovy. For Europe, Russia is still a world that is a mystery, a country that at the same time fascinates and scares
