The cardinal coup of artistic consciousness, which marked the birth of various avant -garde directions in art, contributed to the formation of a view of the classical heritage as something outdated, and often hostile to the worldview of modernity. However, it is obvious that in the work of the brightest representatives of the artistic world of communication with the culture of past centuries did not disappear, but gained other forms. The author considers the complex existence of the images of antiquity in the art of the late XIX and XX century. Various interpretations of ancient motifs are investigated in solving plastic problems in the process of creating a new language of art, as well as how much the search for new expressiveness reflected in archetypal images, endowing them with other meanings.
