The attention of the readers presents the work of a famous historian, corresponding member of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences Evgeny Frantsevich Shmurlo (1853-1934) His book saw the light in Prague in 1929, has long become a bibliographic rarity, and therefore turned out to be inaccessible to readers. Meanwhile, now it remains an original study on Voltaire"s work on the history of the Russian Empire under Peter the Great. Of particular value are documentary applications for the book, which make it possible to penetrate the creative laboratory of Voltaire, clarify the attitude of critics, primarily M. V. Lomonosov and G. F. Miller, to his work. The publication of labor E.F. Shmurlo is preceded by an introductory article, which gives a historiographical assessment of his works about the Peter"s era.
